Single Player: The single player racing is relatively simple. Real FX's simple intelligent car racing gets the Hotwheels treatment with new attack strategies and improved controllers. It's not the cheapest but the longevity, exuberant racing and variety make Anki Overdrive great value for a wide range of players of different ages. Expansions available are Super trucks $59.99, Super cars $49.99 plus tablet, track pieces from $9.99 to $39.99. You do need one tablet or smartphone device for each human player though which will stretch the budgets for families who don't already have these. Value : Based on current Amazon prices, the $99 Starter Kit is great value offering two cars and a load of track to get started. This creates a strong video game feel but younger players can feel a little disconnected from the action compared to a physical controller. Different attacks are triggered on the screen along with a readout of progress. The cars keep themselves on track but players tilt the smartphone to steer and adjust speed. Also, the large physical presence of the trucks add a lot of fun to the raw racing itself.Ĭontrol: The Anki Overdrive racing is controlled with an app. These race on the same track against the cars but offer new games modes and attacks. This year sees the addition of articulated Anki Supertrucks. The cars charge up quite quickly but you don't get as long a play time as with the other sets.

You can electronically upgrade them with the app between races to equip new weapons and enhanced abilities. This gives them a futuristic look and feel. Also, because it has a stiffness to it you can flex it up and down onto furniture to create ramps, jumps and loops.Ĭars: The cars are fictional rather than real world models like with Scalextrics but they have been designed by the same person responsible for many Hollywood film vehicles. Although you get fewer pieces than Hotwheels AI it invites greater creativity as it's much less fiddly. It's by far the easiest and most fun to set up. Track: The Anki track is flexible and snaps together with magnets. Add in additional cars or the new Super Trucks to further extend the multiplayer experience with Truck battles and new Truck Takedown modes. There are a range of modes that start with the classic time trial, battle and race but also extend into video game territory with the likes of King of the Hill. Multiplayer: Racing against real people works well too. It's very much like a video game played out on the living room floor.
